How to Check What Is Slowing Down Your Computer

A slow computer usually stems from high CPU usage, insufficient RAM, disk bottlenecks, or too many startup programs. These diagnostic steps will pinpoint the exact cause so you can address it directly.

  1. Open Task Manager or Activity Monitor. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On Mac, press Cmd+Space, type 'Activity Monitor' and press Enter. This shows real-time resource usage for all running programs.
  2. Check CPU usage patterns. Click the CPU column header to sort by highest usage. Look for processes consistently using over 80% CPU. Normal idle usage should stay under 10%. Note any unfamiliar programs consuming significant resources.
  3. Examine memory consumption. Switch to the Memory tab and sort by highest RAM usage. If total memory usage exceeds 80% of available RAM, you have insufficient memory. Identify the largest memory consumers and determine if they're necessary.
  4. Monitor disk activity. Check the Disk column in Task Manager or the 'Disk Activity' section in Activity Monitor. Sustained 100% disk usage indicates a storage bottleneck. Note which processes are reading or writing the most data to your drive.
  5. Review startup programs. In Task Manager, click the 'Startup' tab to see programs that launch at boot. Disable unnecessary startup items by right-clicking and selecting 'Disable'. On Mac, go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
  6. Check for malware and background processes. Run Windows Defender full scan or use Malware Detection on Mac through System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Look for unfamiliar processes consuming resources. End suspicious tasks after researching them online.
  7. Test performance after changes. Restart your computer and monitor performance for normal daily tasks. Check if CPU, memory, and disk usage have improved. Repeat the monitoring process to verify your changes resolved the slowdown.
