How to Calibrate a Laptop Battery
Battery calibration resets your laptop's power management system to display accurate charge percentages and maximize battery lifespan. This process involves a full discharge and recharge cycle to recalibrate the battery's internal meter.
- Adjust power settings to prevent sleep. Open Settings > System > Power & sleep (Windows) or System Preferences > Energy Saver (Mac). Set both 'When plugged in' and 'On battery power' sleep settings to 'Never'. This prevents your laptop from entering sleep mode during the calibration process.
- Charge battery to 100 percent. Connect your laptop charger and charge the battery completely. Wait for the charging indicator to show 100% or the charging light to turn green. Keep the charger connected for an additional 2 hours after reaching full charge to ensure complete saturation.
- Disconnect the charger. Unplug the power adapter from your laptop. Ensure no external power source is connected. The laptop should now run entirely on battery power.
- Use laptop until complete discharge. Continue using your laptop normally until the battery completely drains and the system automatically shuts down. Do not manually shut down or put the laptop to sleep during this process. This can take 2-8 hours depending on your battery capacity and usage.
- Leave laptop powered off for 5 hours. After the automatic shutdown, leave your laptop completely powered off for at least 5 hours. This allows the battery to reach its lowest possible charge state and ensures the calibration process is thorough.
- Reconnect charger and charge to 100 percent. Plug in your charger and power on the laptop. Charge the battery to 100% without interruption. The charging process should take longer than usual as the battery management system recalibrates.
- Restore original power settings. Return to Settings > System > Power & sleep (Windows) or System Preferences > Energy Saver (Mac) and restore your preferred sleep and power management settings.
