How to Monetize a YouTube Channel
Learn how to enable YouTube monetization through the Partner Program, ad revenue, memberships, and alternative income streams with step-by-step instructions.
- Meet YouTube Partner Program eligibility requirements. Accumulate 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours within the past 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Ensure your channel follows YouTube's monetization policies and Community Guidelines. Verify you live in a country where the YouTube Partner Program is available.
- Apply for the YouTube Partner Program. Navigate to YouTube Studio, click 'Monetization' in the left sidebar, then click 'Start' under 'Partner Program application.' Complete the application by accepting YouTube's terms, connecting an approved AdSense account, and confirming your identity with a government-issued ID. YouTube typically reviews applications within one month.
- Enable ad monetization on your videos. Once approved for the Partner Program, go to YouTube Studio > Monetization > Ad Revenue. Turn on monetization and select your ad preferences. For individual videos, edit each video and check 'Monetization' to enable ads, or set monetization as the default for new uploads in your upload defaults.
- Set up channel memberships. Navigate to YouTube Studio > Monetization > Memberships. Click 'Get Started' and customize membership tiers with unique perks like custom badges, emojis, or members-only posts. Set pricing between $0.99 and $99.99 per month. Channel memberships require 1,000 subscribers and are unavailable for channels marked as made for kids.
- Enable Super Chat and Super Thanks. Go to YouTube Studio > Monetization > Supers. Turn on Super Chat for live streams and Super Thanks for regular videos. These features allow viewers to pay to highlight their messages during live streams or show appreciation for videos. Both features are automatically enabled when you join the Partner Program in eligible countries.
- Connect YouTube Shorts Fund and set up merchandise. YouTube Shorts creators can earn from the Shorts Fund without Partner Program membership. For merchandise, connect your channel to approved merchandise partners through YouTube Studio > Monetization > Merchandise. Upload product designs and set pricing. Merchandise shelves appear below your videos automatically once connected.
- Monitor earnings and optimize revenue streams. Track your earnings in YouTube Studio Analytics > Revenue tab. Monitor which videos generate the most ad revenue, membership sign-ups, and Super Chat donations. Adjust your content strategy based on performance data. Payment occurs monthly when you reach the $100 minimum threshold through AdSense.
