How to Set Up Encrypted Messaging

Set up secure, encrypted messaging with Signal, WhatsApp, or Telegram. Protect your conversations with end-to-end encryption in minutes.

  1. Choose your encrypted messaging app. Download Signal for maximum security, WhatsApp for convenience with existing contacts, or Telegram for group features. Signal offers the strongest encryption with open-source code. All three apps are free on iOS App Store, Google Play Store, and desktop platforms.
  2. Verify your phone number. Open the app and enter your phone number when prompted. Check your text messages for a verification code, then enter it in the app. This links your phone number to your encrypted messaging account and allows contacts to find you.
  3. Enable disappearing messages. Tap the contact name at the top of any conversation, then select 'Disappearing Messages' or 'Message Timer.' Choose a time limit from 30 seconds to 1 week. Messages automatically delete after this period from both devices, leaving no permanent record.
  4. Verify contact identity. Open a conversation with an important contact, tap their name, then select 'View Safety Number' or 'Encryption Key.' Compare this number in person or through another secure channel. This confirms you're messaging the real person and not an imposter.
  5. Configure backup settings. Navigate to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. For Signal, backups are optional and encrypted with a separate passphrase. For WhatsApp, enable encrypted backups by creating a password or 64-digit encryption key. Store your backup credentials securely.
  6. Set up desktop access. Download the desktop app from the official website. Open the mobile app, go to Settings > Linked Devices, then scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen. Your conversations sync across devices while maintaining encryption.
  7. Test encrypted messaging. Send a test message to a contact who also has the app installed. Look for encryption indicators like a lock icon, 'encrypted' label, or security number in the conversation. Send a disappearing message to confirm the timer works correctly.
