How to Use Privacy-Focused Browsers

Learn to configure and use privacy-focused browsers like Firefox, Brave, and Tor to protect your online data and browsing habits from tracking.

  1. Choose your privacy browser. Download Firefox, Brave, or Tor Browser from their official websites. Firefox offers strong privacy controls with customization options. Brave blocks ads and trackers by default while supporting cryptocurrency rewards. Tor provides maximum anonymity by routing traffic through multiple encrypted servers.
  2. Configure tracking protection settings. Open your browser settings and navigate to Privacy & Security. In Firefox, set Tracking Protection to Strict mode. In Brave, enable Shields and set them to Aggressive blocking. Enable fingerprinting protection and disable telemetry data collection in all browsers.
  3. Disable location and camera permissions. Navigate to Site Permissions in your browser settings. Block location access, camera access, microphone access, and notifications by default. Set these to Ask before accessing rather than allowing automatic permissions. Remove permissions from sites that previously had access.
  4. Configure search engine settings. Change your default search engine to DuckDuckGo, Startpage, or Searx in browser settings. These search engines do not track queries or store personal data. Remove Google, Bing, and Yahoo from your search engine list to avoid accidental use.
  5. Install essential privacy extensions. Add uBlock Origin for advanced ad and tracker blocking. Install ClearURLs to remove tracking parameters from links. Add Decentraleyes to protect against content delivery network tracking. Avoid installing too many extensions as they can create unique fingerprints.
  6. Set up secure DNS. Navigate to Network Settings in your browser and enable DNS over HTTPS. Choose Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Quad9 (9.9.9.9) as your DNS provider. This encrypts DNS queries and prevents your internet provider from seeing which websites you visit.
  7. Enable private browsing by default. Set your browser to always open in private or incognito mode. This prevents local storage of browsing history, cookies, and temporary files. Configure your browser to clear all data when closing sessions. Use separate browser profiles for different activities.
