How to Increase Your YouTube Views
Optimize your YouTube channel with SEO, thumbnails, and upload strategy to attract more viewers and grow your audience.
- Research keywords your audience searches for. Open YouTube and search terms related to your video topic. Note the autocomplete suggestions—these are real searches people perform. Use Google Trends or YouTube's search analytics to identify high-volume, low-competition keywords. Write down 3–5 primary keywords you can naturally use in your title and description.
- Write a title that includes your primary keyword. Place your most important keyword in the first 60 characters of your title. YouTube's algorithm prioritizes keywords at the beginning of titles. Make the title descriptive and searchable, not clickbait. Example: 'How to Fix WordPress 404 Errors (Complete Guide)' works better than 'You Won't Believe This WordPress Trick.'
- Create a high-contrast thumbnail with large text. Open Canva or your thumbnail design tool. Use a 1280×720 pixel template. Add one bold, readable word or short phrase that summarizes the video. Choose contrasting colors—the thumbnail must be legible at 168×94 pixels (how it appears on mobile). Include your face or a relevant image that evokes curiosity or emotion. Test by viewing at mobile size before publishing.
- Fill your description with keywords and links. In YouTube Studio, click Details under your video. In the description field, write the first 2–3 sentences as a natural summary that includes your primary keyword. Add relevant secondary keywords naturally. Include links to playlists, your website, or related videos. YouTube indexes descriptions for search, so keyword density matters, but avoid stuffing.
- Add tags that match your keywords. In YouTube Studio, go to Details and scroll to Tags. Add 5–10 tags, starting with your primary keyword as the first tag. Make tags specific and related to your content. Example for a productivity video: 'productivity tips', 'time management', 'daily routine'. Avoid generic tags like 'video' or 'YouTube'.
- Choose a custom playlist or create a new one. In YouTube Studio, go to Details and find Playlist. Select an existing playlist relevant to your video or create a new one. Playlists group videos by topic, which increases watch time and allows viewers to watch related content consecutively. YouTube favors videos in active playlists.
- Schedule uploads and promote in your other channels. In YouTube Studio, set a publish time when your audience is most active. Check YouTube Analytics to see when your subscribers are online. After publishing, share the link to Twitter, email, Discord, or other platforms where your audience congregates. Cross-platform promotion drives initial momentum, which YouTube's algorithm rewards with higher placement.
- Review analytics and refine your strategy. In YouTube Studio, go to Analytics. Check Click-Through Rate (CTR) on the Traffic Sources tab. If your CTR is below 4%, redesign your thumbnail. Check Average View Duration. If viewers drop off in the first 15 seconds, your hook needs work. Track which videos earn the most views and identify patterns in titles, topics, and formats. Repeat what works.
