How to Start a YouTube Channel from Scratch
Create your YouTube channel in minutes. Set up your account, customize your channel, and upload your first video.
- Sign in to your Google Account. Go to youtube.com. Click the Sign In button in the top right corner. Enter your Google Account email and password. If you don't have a Google Account, click Create Account and follow the setup process. You'll be taken to your YouTube homepage once authenticated.
- Create your channel. Click your profile icon in the top right corner. Select Create a Channel from the dropdown menu. Choose a channel name that reflects your content. Use your real name, a brand name, or a descriptive title—you can change it later. Click Create. YouTube generates your channel instantly with a default layout.
- Add a channel profile picture and banner. Click Customization > Branding in the left sidebar. Under Profile Picture, click the camera icon and upload a square image (minimum 800x800 pixels). Under Banner Image, upload a landscape image (2560x1440 pixels recommended). Save changes. Your profile picture appears next to your channel name on every upload. The banner displays at the top of your channel homepage.
- Write your channel description and add links. Click Customization > Basic Info. Under Description, write 1-3 sentences explaining what your channel offers. Include keywords relevant to your content. Under Links, add your website, social media accounts, or contact information—up to five links are displayed on your channel banner. Click Save. Your description helps viewers understand your channel's purpose and find related content.
- Configure channel settings and monetization eligibility. Click Settings > Channel in the left sidebar. Under Channel Type, select whether your channel features a brand, person, or organization. Review your email preferences—disable notifications you don't need. Scroll to Advanced Settings and verify your location and language. Save changes. These settings affect how YouTube recommends your content and determines eligibility for monetization features.
- Prepare and upload your first video. Click the Camera icon > Upload Video in the top right corner. Select a video file from your computer (supports MP4, MOV, AVI, and 14 other formats). YouTube uploads and processes the file—this takes 5 minutes to several hours depending on length and resolution. While uploading, add a Title (60 characters max), Description (5,000 characters max), and select whether the video is Made for Kids. Choose Unlisted (visible to anyone with the link), Public (searchable), or Private (you only).
- Add tags, thumbnail, and publish settings. On the upload details page, scroll to Tags. Add 5-10 relevant tags separated by commas (examples: tutorial, beginner, editing). Under Thumbnail, click Upload Custom Thumbnail and select an image (1280x720 pixels, JPG or PNG). Thumbnails with faces, text, and contrasting colors perform best. Click Save in the top right. Select whether to Publish Immediately or Schedule for a specific date and time.
- Publish your video. Click Publish or Schedule (depending on your selection). YouTube displays a confirmation with your video URL. Share the link on social media, your website, or with friends. Check your video within 24 hours to verify it uploaded correctly and captions were generated automatically (if available in your language). Use YouTube Analytics to track views, watch time, and audience demographics.
