How to Set Up YouTube Live Streaming

Complete guide to setting up YouTube live streaming. Enable live streaming, configure settings, choose streaming software, and go live in minutes.

  1. Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel. Open YouTube Studio and click Create > Go live in the top right. If this is your first time, YouTube will prompt you to enable live streaming. Click Enable and verify your channel with a phone number. Wait 24 hours for live streaming to activate on new channels.
  2. Choose your streaming method. YouTube offers three streaming options: Webcam for basic streaming directly from your browser, Mobile for streaming from the YouTube mobile app, and Streaming software for advanced setups with OBS, Streamlabs, or similar tools. Select the method that matches your equipment and technical requirements.
  3. Configure your stream settings. In YouTube Studio, click Create > Go live and select your streaming method. Set your stream title, description, and visibility (Public, Unlisted, or Private). Choose whether to enable chat, set your category, and select if the stream is made for kids. Click Create Stream to generate your stream key if using streaming software.
  4. Set up your streaming software. Download OBS Studio, Streamlabs, or your preferred streaming software. Add your stream key and server URL from YouTube Studio into the software's streaming settings. Configure your video resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on your internet upload speed. Test your audio and video sources before going live.
  5. Test your stream setup. Start streaming in your software but keep your YouTube stream as Unlisted for testing. Check that your audio levels are between -12dB and -6dB, verify your video quality looks sharp, and ensure your internet connection remains stable. Monitor the stream health indicator in YouTube Studio for any connection issues.
  6. Go live and manage your broadcast. Change your stream visibility to Public when ready and click Start Streaming in your software. Monitor chat messages, viewer count, and stream health in YouTube Studio. Interact with your audience through chat and keep an eye on technical indicators throughout your broadcast.
  7. End your stream properly. Stop streaming in your software first, then click End Stream in YouTube Studio. Your live stream will automatically be saved as a video on your channel unless you disable this in settings. Review your stream analytics to see viewer engagement, peak viewership, and chat activity.
