How to Use a VPN Correctly

Learn the proper way to configure and use a VPN for maximum privacy and security. Complete guide covering setup, best practices, and common mistakes.

  1. Choose a no-logs VPN provider with strong encryption. Select a VPN service that uses AES-256 encryption and maintains a verified no-logs policy. Look for providers based outside the 14 Eyes surveillance alliance countries. Avoid free VPN services as they typically log your data and sell it to advertisers.
  2. Enable the kill switch before connecting. Open your VPN client and navigate to Settings or Preferences. Find the kill switch option (sometimes called Network Lock or Auto-Disconnect) and enable it. This prevents your real IP address from leaking if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly.
  3. Configure DNS leak protection. In your VPN settings, enable DNS leak protection or custom DNS servers. This prevents your DNS queries from bypassing the VPN tunnel and revealing your browsing activity to your internet service provider. Many VPN clients include this feature automatically.
  4. Select the appropriate VPN protocol. Choose WireGuard for the best balance of speed and security, or OpenVPN for maximum compatibility. Avoid PPTP and L2TP protocols as they have known security vulnerabilities. Most modern VPN clients will automatically select the best protocol for your connection.
  5. Connect to the right server location. Select a server close to your physical location for better speeds, or choose a specific country if you need to bypass geo-restrictions. Avoid servers in countries with strict surveillance laws or data retention requirements. Connect before starting any sensitive online activities.
  6. Verify your IP address and location have changed. Open a web browser and visit an IP checking website to confirm your IP address shows the VPN server's location, not your real location. Check for WebRTC leaks, which can expose your real IP address even when using a VPN.
  7. Disable location services and use private browsing. Turn off GPS and location services on your device to prevent apps from bypassing your VPN location. Use incognito or private browsing mode to avoid leaving traces in your browser history. Clear cookies and disable JavaScript if maximum privacy is required.
