How to Use LinkedIn Recommendations

Learn to request, give, and manage LinkedIn recommendations to strengthen your professional profile and build credibility with colleagues.

  1. Navigate to the recommendations section. Click your profile photo in the top navigation bar, then select 'View profile'. Scroll down to the 'Recommendations' section below your experience entries. If you don't see this section, click the 'Add profile section' button and select 'Recommendations' from the dropdown menu.
  2. Request a recommendation from a connection. Click 'Ask for a recommendation' in the recommendations section. Select the person you want to request from using the search field. Choose the position or role you want them to recommend you for from the dropdown menu. Write a personalized message explaining what specific projects or achievements you'd like them to highlight.
  3. Write a recommendation for someone else. Go to the profile of the person you want to recommend. Click the 'More' button below their profile photo and select 'Recommend'. Choose your relationship to them and the position you're recommending them for. Write 2-3 paragraphs highlighting specific accomplishments, skills, and work quality with concrete examples.
  4. Manage pending recommendation requests. Click the 'Me' icon in the top navigation and select 'Settings & Privacy'. Go to 'Privacy' tab, then click 'How others see your profile and network info'. Select 'Managing received recommendations' to view pending requests. You can write, edit, or decline recommendations from this dashboard.
  5. Edit or hide existing recommendations. Return to the recommendations section on your profile. Click the three dots menu next to any recommendation you've received. Select 'Request revision' to ask for changes, 'Hide from profile' to remove it from public view, or 'Show on profile' to make it visible again. For recommendations you've written, visit the recipient's profile and edit directly.
  6. Optimize recommendation display order. Scroll to your recommendations section and click the pencil icon to edit. Drag and drop recommendations to reorder them by importance and relevance to your current career goals. Place the most recent and relevant recommendations at the top where visitors will see them first.
