How to Fix Instagram DMs Not Sending

Fix Instagram direct messages that won't send with these proven troubleshooting steps. Resolve network, app, and account issues quickly.

  1. Check your internet connection. Open Safari or Chrome and load any website to verify internet access. Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to test both connections. A weak or unstable connection prevents message delivery even when Instagram appears to load normally.
  2. Force quit and restart Instagram. On iPhone, swipe up and pause mid-screen, then swipe up on Instagram to close it. On Android, tap the recent apps button and swipe away Instagram. Reopen the app from your home screen. This clears temporary glitches that block message sending.
  3. Update the Instagram app. Open the App Store or Google Play Store and search for Instagram. Tap Update if available. Outdated app versions often have message delivery bugs that newer versions fix. Restart your phone after updating.
  4. Clear Instagram's cache and data. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Storage > Clear Cache, then Clear Data. On iPhone, delete and reinstall Instagram from the App Store. This removes corrupted data that interferes with messaging functions.
  5. Check if the recipient blocked you. Search for the recipient's username in Instagram search. If their profile doesn't appear or shows no posts when you can see it from another account, you may be blocked. Blocked users cannot send messages to the person who blocked them.
  6. Verify your account isn't restricted. Check for notifications about account restrictions or violations in your Instagram notifications tab. Restricted accounts have limited messaging capabilities. Review Instagram's community guidelines if you received violation warnings.
  7. Test messaging from Instagram web. Open instagram.com in your browser and log in. Try sending a message to the same person from the web interface. If web messaging works but the app doesn't, reinstall the mobile app completely.
