How to Fix Facebook Two-Factor Authentication Lockout
Regain access to your Facebook account when locked out of two-factor authentication. Step-by-step recovery methods including backup codes and support.
- Try alternative verification methods. On the Facebook login screen, enter your email and password. When prompted for the 6-digit code, click 'Having trouble?' below the code field. Select 'Use one of your saved backup codes' if you previously saved them, or choose 'Get codes via SMS' to try receiving codes on a different phone number.
- Use your saved backup codes. If you previously downloaded backup codes, locate the file on your device or printed copy. Enter any unused 8-digit backup code in the verification field. Each code works only once, so mark it as used after successful login.
- Access through a recognized device. Try logging in from a device you've used before, such as your home computer or tablet. Facebook may recognize the device and allow login without two-factor authentication. Look for the option 'Don't ask for codes on this device' during previous logins.
- Contact trusted friends for help. Click 'No longer have access to these?' on the verification screen. Select 'Contact friends' and choose 3-5 trusted friends from the list. Facebook will send each friend a security code. Collect these codes from your friends and enter them to regain access.
- Submit an identity verification request. If other methods fail, click 'Get help from Facebook' on the login screen. Submit a government-issued photo ID that matches your Facebook name. Upload a clear image showing your full name and photo. Facebook reviews requests within 24-48 hours.
- Reset two-factor authentication settings. Once you regain access, immediately go to Settings & Privacy > Security and Login > Two-Factor Authentication. Turn off the current method, then re-enable it with a working phone number or authentication app. Download new backup codes and store them securely.
