How to Fix Email Sync Issues on Your Phone

Fix email sync problems on iPhone and Android. Step-by-step troubleshooting for when emails won't sync, update, or refresh on mobile devices.

  1. Check your internet connection. Verify you have a stable internet connection by opening a web browser or another app that requires internet access. Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to test both connections. If neither works properly, resolve your network connection before proceeding.
  2. Force refresh your email app. Open your email app and pull down on the inbox to manually refresh. On iPhone Mail, swipe down from the top of your inbox. On Gmail or other Android email apps, swipe down from the message list. Wait for the refresh animation to complete.
  3. Restart your email app completely. Close the email app entirely and reopen it. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom, find the email app, and swipe up on its preview. On Android, use the recent apps button and swipe away the email app. Reopen the app from your home screen.
  4. Verify email account settings. Navigate to Settings > Mail > Accounts on iPhone, or Settings > Accounts on Android. Select your email account and verify the incoming and outgoing server settings match your email provider's specifications. Ensure your username and password are correct.
  5. Remove and re-add your email account. Delete the problematic email account from your phone's settings, then add it back. On iPhone, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts, select the account, and tap Delete Account. On Android, go to Settings > Accounts, select the email account, and tap Remove. Re-add the account using the same menu.
  6. Update your email app and phone software. Check for app updates in the App Store or Google Play Store. Install any available updates for your email app. Also check for system updates in Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone, or Settings > System Update on Android.
  7. Reset network settings if problems persist. If sync issues continue, reset your network settings. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. On Android, go to Settings > System > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will erase all saved Wi-Fi passwords and cellular settings.
