How to Fix Microphone Not Working on Zoom
Microphone problems in Zoom can disrupt meetings and prevent others from hearing you clearly. Most audio issues stem from incorrect settings, permission blocks, or hardware conflicts that you can resolve quickly.
- Test your microphone outside Zoom. Open your computer's sound settings and speak into your microphone. On Windows, go to Settings > System > Sound > Microphone and check the input level bars. On Mac, open System Preferences > Sound > Input and watch the level indicator move as you speak.
- Check Zoom microphone permissions. Ensure Zoom has permission to access your microphone. On Mac, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone and check the box next to Zoom. On Windows 10/11, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and toggle on access for Zoom.
- Select the correct microphone in Zoom. In Zoom, click the arrow next to the microphone icon and select your desired microphone from the dropdown menu. If you're not in a meeting, go to Settings > Audio > Microphone and choose the correct device from the list.
- Adjust microphone levels in Zoom. In Zoom's audio settings, ensure 'Automatically adjust microphone volume' is enabled, or manually drag the input level slider to an appropriate level. Speak normally and aim for the meter to reach the green zone without hitting the red.
- Test audio before joining meetings. In Zoom's audio settings, click 'Test Mic' and speak for a few seconds, then click 'Recording' to hear your voice played back. If you can't hear yourself clearly, return to step 3 and try a different microphone or adjust levels further.
- Update or reinstall audio drivers. If your microphone still doesn't work, update your audio drivers through Device Manager on Windows or check for macOS updates. For persistent issues, uninstall and reinstall Zoom completely, which often resolves corrupted audio configurations.
