How to Fix Autofill Passwords Not Working
Autofill password failures prevent you from accessing saved login credentials across websites and apps. This disrupts your workflow and forces manual password entry, often revealing underlying browser settings or sync issues that need immediate attention.
- Check autofill settings in your browser. Open your browser settings and navigate to the password or autofill section. In Chrome, go to Settings > Autofill > Passwords. In Safari, choose Safari > Preferences > Passwords. In Firefox, select Settings > Privacy & Security > Logins and Passwords. Verify that 'Offer to save passwords' and 'Auto-fill passwords' are enabled.
- Clear browser cache and cookies. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+Delete (Mac) to open the clear browsing data dialog. Select 'Cached images and files' and 'Cookies and other site data' from the past 24 hours or all time. Click 'Clear data' and restart your browser to reset the autofill system.
- Update your browser to the latest version. Check for browser updates by clicking the menu button and selecting 'About' or 'Help > About'. Chrome updates automatically, Safari updates through System Preferences > Software Update on Mac, and Firefox checks under Help > About Firefox. Install any available updates and restart the browser.
- Disable conflicting password managers. Open your browser extensions or add-ons page by typing chrome://extensions, about:addons, or edge://extensions in the address bar. Temporarily disable third-party password managers like LastPass, 1Password, or Dashlane. Test autofill with only your browser's built-in password manager active.
- Reset sync settings for your browser account. Sign out of your browser account completely through Settings > Sync. Wait 30 seconds, then sign back in and choose to merge your local data with synced data. This refreshes the connection between your device and cloud-stored passwords, resolving sync conflicts.
- Check website-specific autofill permissions. Visit the problematic website and click the lock icon next to the URL in the address bar. Look for password or autofill permissions and ensure they're set to 'Allow' or 'Ask'. Some sites block autofill for security reasons, requiring manual override in your browser's site settings.
- Manually re-save problematic passwords. Navigate to the login page that isn't working and manually enter your username and password. When the browser prompts to save or update the password, click 'Save' or 'Update'. This creates a fresh password entry that should autofill properly on future visits.
