How to Fix AirPods When One Side Stops Working

When one AirPod stops producing sound, the issue typically stems from connectivity problems, audio balance settings, or debris blocking the speaker. These troubleshooting steps resolve the problem in most cases.

  1. Check the audio balance settings. Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual on your iPhone or iPad. Ensure the balance slider sits in the center position. If it's moved toward the working side, drag it back to center. Test your AirPods after adjusting.
  2. Clean the AirPods and charging case. Remove both AirPods from the case. Use a dry cotton swab to clean the speaker mesh on the non-working AirPod. Clean the charging contacts on both the AirPod and inside the case with the cotton swab. Avoid getting moisture in any openings.
  3. Reset the Bluetooth connection. Go to Settings > Bluetooth on your device. Tap the 'i' icon next to your AirPods name. Select 'Forget This Device' and confirm. Place both AirPods in the charging case for 30 seconds, then reconnect by opening the case near your device.
  4. Drain and recharge both AirPods. Use your AirPods until both are completely dead. Place them in the charging case and charge for at least 15 minutes. This recalibrates the battery management system and can resolve power-related audio issues.
  5. Perform a factory reset. Place both AirPods in the charging case and close the lid. Wait 30 seconds, then open the lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes amber, then white. Reconnect your AirPods to your device.
  6. Test with automatic ear detection disabled. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the 'i' next to your AirPods, and turn off 'Automatic Ear Detection.' Play audio and test both sides. If this fixes the issue, one AirPod's sensor may be dirty or damaged.
  7. Update your device software. Install any pending iOS, iPadOS, or macOS updates through Settings > General > Software Update. AirPods firmware updates automatically when connected to an updated device and placed in the charging case.
