How to Change Your Wi-Fi Password
Changing your Wi-Fi password strengthens your network security and prevents unauthorized access. This process requires accessing your router's admin interface through a web browser.
- Find your router's IP address. Open Command Prompt on Windows (press Windows + R, type cmd) or Terminal on Mac (press Cmd + Space, type Terminal). Type 'ipconfig' on Windows or 'route -n get default | grep gateway' on Mac. Look for the Default Gateway address, typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
- Access your router's admin panel. Open any web browser and enter your router's IP address in the address bar. Press Enter to load the login page. You'll see a username and password prompt for router access.
- Log in with admin credentials. Enter your router's admin username and password. Default credentials are often printed on a sticker on your router (look for 'admin' username with a password like 'admin' or 'password'). If you've changed these before, use your custom credentials.
- Navigate to wireless security settings. Look for sections labeled 'Wireless', 'Wi-Fi Settings', 'WLAN', or 'Wireless Security' in the main menu. Click on this section to expand wireless configuration options. Different router brands place this in different menu locations.
- Locate the password field. Find the field labeled 'Password', 'Passphrase', 'Network Key', or 'PSK'. This field contains your current Wi-Fi password, which may appear as dots or asterisks for security.
- Enter your new password. Delete the existing password and type your new one. Use a combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Make it at least 12 characters long for strong security.
- Save the changes. Click 'Save', 'Apply', or 'Update Settings' to confirm your new password. Your router will restart or apply the changes, which takes 30-60 seconds. The admin panel may refresh automatically.
- Reconnect your devices. Your devices will disconnect from Wi-Fi when the password changes. Go to Wi-Fi settings on each device, select your network, and enter the new password to reconnect.
