How to Recover a Deleted Email

Deleted emails can be recovered from most email clients within a specific timeframe. Email providers typically store deleted messages in a Trash or Deleted Items folder before permanent deletion occurs.

1. Check your Trash or Deleted Items folder. Open your email client and locate the Trash folder (Gmail), Deleted Items (Outlook), or Bin (Apple Mail). Click on the folder to view all deleted emails. Look for your missing email by sender, subject line, or date received.
2. Restore the email to your inbox. Right-click on the deleted email and select Move to Inbox or Restore. In Gmail, click the Move to Inbox icon. In Outlook, drag the email back to your Inbox or right-click and select Move > Inbox.
3. Check the Spam or Junk folder. Navigate to your Spam, Junk, or Promotions folder if the email is not in Trash. Email filters sometimes incorrectly categorize legitimate emails as spam. Review recent messages in these folders for your missing email.
4. Search your entire mailbox. Use your email client's search function to scan all folders. Type the sender's email address, subject keywords, or specific phrases from the email content. Include quotation marks around exact phrases for more precise results.
5. Check email forwarding rules and filters. Access your email settings and review any active filters, rules, or forwarding configurations. Look for rules that might automatically move, delete, or forward emails matching certain criteria. Disable problematic rules temporarily.
6. Contact your email provider for server-level recovery. If the email was permanently deleted beyond your client's recovery period, contact your email provider's support team. Provide the approximate date, sender information, and subject line. Enterprise accounts often have extended recovery options through administrators.
