How to Fix Browser Redirects and Popups

Browser redirects and persistent popups indicate malware infection or corrupted browser settings. These intrusions slow performance, compromise privacy, and create security risks that require immediate removal.

  1. Run a full system malware scan. Open Windows Security (Windows 10/11) or install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Run a complete system scan, not a quick scan. Quarantine or delete all detected threats. Restart your computer after removal completes.
  2. Check installed browser extensions. Open Chrome Settings > Extensions or Firefox Add-ons Manager. Review all installed extensions for unfamiliar names or recent installations. Remove any extensions you didn't install or don't recognize. Disable suspicious extensions one by one to identify the culprit.
  3. Reset browser search engine settings. Navigate to Chrome Settings > Search Engine > Manage Search Engines or Firefox Preferences > Search. Remove unknown search engines from the list. Set Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo as your default. Delete any search engines with suspicious URLs or names.
  4. Clear browser data completely. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete to open Clear Browsing Data. Select 'All time' as the time range. Check cookies, cached images, browsing history, and site data. Click Clear Data and wait for completion. This removes stored redirect instructions.
  5. Check system hosts file. Open Notepad as Administrator. Navigate to File > Open and browse to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. Look for suspicious entries below the localhost lines. Delete any unfamiliar website redirections. Save the file.
  6. Update browser and enable popup blocking. Check for browser updates in Settings > About Chrome or Help > About Firefox. Install available updates and restart. Enable popup blocking in Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects (Chrome) or Preferences > Privacy & Security > Permissions (Firefox).
  7. Scan for unwanted programs. Open Windows Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Sort by installation date to find recently added software. Uninstall any unfamiliar programs, especially those installed around the time redirects began. Focus on toolbars, optimizers, and free software bundles.
