How to Fix WiFi That Keeps Disconnecting

Stop constant WiFi disconnections with these proven troubleshooting steps. Fix router issues, update drivers, and optimize your wireless connection.

  1. Restart your router and modem. Unplug your router and modem from power for 30 seconds. Plug in the modem first, wait 2 minutes for full startup, then plug in the router. Wait another 2 minutes before testing your connection.
  2. Update your WiFi adapter driver. Open Device Manager by pressing Windows + X and selecting it. Expand Network adapters, right-click your WiFi adapter, and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers. Restart your computer after installation completes.
  3. Reset your network settings. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Status. Click Network reset at the bottom of the page. Click Reset now and confirm. Your computer will restart and reinstall all network adapters with default settings.
  4. Change your WiFi channel. Access your router's admin panel by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser. Log in with admin credentials. Navigate to Wireless Settings and change the channel to 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4GHz, or find an uncrowded channel for 5GHz.
  5. Disable power management for your WiFi adapter. Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and double-click your WiFi adapter. Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK and restart your computer.
  6. Update your router firmware. Access your router's admin panel and navigate to System or Administration settings. Check the current firmware version against the latest version on your router manufacturer's website. Download and install any available updates through the router interface.
  7. Move closer to the router or add a WiFi extender. Test your connection at various distances from your router. If disconnections occur in specific locations, the signal strength is insufficient. Position your router in a central, elevated location away from interference sources, or install a WiFi extender for larger spaces.
