How to Clear App Cache on MacBook Air
Clear app cache on your MacBook Air to free storage and improve performance. Step-by-step instructions for macOS.
- Open Finder and navigate to the Library folder. Click the Finder icon in the Dock. Press Command+Shift+G to open the Go to Folder dialog. Type ~/Library and click Go. This opens your user Library folder where app cache is stored.
- Navigate to the Caches folder. In the Library folder, look for the Caches folder. Double-click it to open. This folder contains cached data for all installed applications on your Mac.
- Identify which cache folders to clear. Scan the list of cache folders. Folders are typically named after the app developer or bundle identifier. You can safely delete cache for apps you no longer use or want to refresh. If unsure about a folder, check Activity Monitor to see if the app is currently running before deleting its cache.
- Select and delete cache folders. Click the cache folder you want to remove. Press Command+Delete or right-click and select Move to Trash. Repeat for additional cache folders. You can select multiple folders using Command+Click to delete them in one action.
- Clear cache from within individual apps. Many apps include built-in cache clearing. Open the app and look in Preferences or Settings, typically under Storage, Cache, or Privacy. Common locations include Safari (Safari > Settings > Privacy), Chrome (Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data), and Mail (Mail > Settings > Accounts). Select the cache or temporary files option and confirm deletion.
- Empty the Trash to complete the process. Right-click the Trash icon in the Dock and select Empty Trash. This permanently removes the deleted cache files and recovers the disk space. Close Finder when finished.
