How to Fix WiFi That Keeps Disconnecting

Stop WiFi from constantly disconnecting with these proven troubleshooting steps. Fix connection drops on Windows, Mac, and mobile devices permanently.

  1. Restart your router and modem. Unplug your modem and router for 30 seconds. Plug in the modem first and wait for all lights to stabilize. Then plug in your router and wait for the WiFi indicator to turn solid green or blue.
  2. Update your network adapter driver. Open Device Manager on Windows (Windows + X, then M) or System Information on Mac (Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report). Locate your WiFi adapter, right-click and select Update Driver. Choose automatic driver search and install any available updates.
  3. Forget and reconnect to the network. Delete the saved WiFi network from your device's known networks list. On Windows, go to Settings > Network & Internet > WiFi > Manage known networks. On Mac, System Preferences > Network > Advanced > WiFi tab. Remove the problematic network, then reconnect with your password.
  4. Change your WiFi channel. Access your router's admin panel by typing its IP address in a web browser. Navigate to Wireless Settings and change the channel to 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4GHz networks, or find an uncrowded 5GHz channel using WiFi Analyzer apps. Save settings and restart the router.
  5. Disable power saving for WiFi adapter. Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and double-click your WiFi adapter. Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK and restart your computer.
  6. Reset network settings. On Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator and run netsh winsock reset followed by netsh int ip reset. Restart your computer. On Mac, delete Network preferences: System Preferences > Network > select WiFi > Advanced > Remove configuration files.
  7. Check for interference and distance. Move closer to your router to test if distance is the issue. Remove potential interference sources like microwaves, baby monitors, or Bluetooth devices. If the connection stabilizes when closer, consider adding a WiFi extender or mesh system.
