How to Fix a Webcam That Is Not Working

Fix webcam issues with these proven troubleshooting steps. Check drivers, permissions, hardware connections, and software conflicts to restore video.

  1. Check the physical connection. Unplug your webcam from the USB port and plug it back in firmly. Try a different USB port, preferably USB 3.0 if available. For built-in laptop cameras, ensure no physical switch or function key combination has disabled the camera.
  2. Verify camera permissions. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera on Windows 11, or System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Camera on macOS. Enable camera access for your operating system and the specific applications you want to use. Toggle the permission off and on again to refresh the connection.
  3. Update webcam drivers. Open Device Manager on Windows by pressing Windows + X and selecting Device Manager. Expand the Cameras or Imaging Devices section, right-click your webcam, and select Update Driver. Choose Search Automatically for drivers. On macOS, check for system updates in System Settings > General > Software Update.
  4. Test the camera in different applications. Open the Camera app on Windows or Photo Booth on macOS to test basic functionality. If the built-in apps work, test your webcam in the problematic application like Zoom, Teams, or OBS. Check the application's camera settings to ensure it's selecting the correct device.
  5. Close conflicting applications. Open Task Manager on Windows (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) or Activity Monitor on macOS and close any applications that might be using the camera. Common culprits include video calling apps, streaming software, and browser tabs with camera access. Only one application can typically access the camera at a time.
  6. Reset camera settings. On Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Camera > Advanced Options and click Reset. This clears cached data and permissions. On macOS, reset NVRAM by shutting down, then holding Option + Command + P + R while starting up until you hear the startup sound twice.
  7. Check hardware functionality. Test your external webcam on another computer to verify it's not a hardware failure. For built-in cameras, boot from a USB drive with a different operating system or use the camera during BIOS/UEFI startup if supported. Replace the webcam if it fails on multiple devices.
