How to Fix a Trackpad That Won't Click

Fix trackpad clicking issues on Mac and Windows laptops with these proven troubleshooting steps. Resolve hardware and software problems quickly.

  1. Clean the trackpad surface. Power down your laptop completely. Use a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol to clean the trackpad surface. Remove any debris around the edges where the trackpad meets the palm rest. Allow 30 seconds to dry before powering on.
  2. Check trackpad settings. On Mac, open System Settings > Trackpad and verify Click is set to Light, Medium, or Firm. On Windows, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad and ensure Taps is enabled under Taps. Test clicking after adjusting these settings.
  3. Reset trackpad drivers. On Windows, open Device Manager, expand Mice and other pointing devices, right-click your trackpad, and select Uninstall device. Restart your computer to reinstall drivers automatically. On Mac, reset the SMC by shutting down, pressing Shift-Control-Option on the left side plus power for 10 seconds, then releasing all keys.
  4. Disable conflicting software. Close any third-party mouse or trackpad software temporarily. Common culprits include Logitech Options, Razer Synapse, or generic touchpad utilities. Test trackpad clicking with these programs closed. If clicking works, update or reconfigure the conflicting software.
  5. Test in Safe Mode. Boot into Safe Mode to isolate software issues. On Windows, hold Shift while clicking Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart > Safe Mode. On Mac, hold Shift during startup until you see the login screen. Test trackpad clicking in this environment.
  6. Check for physical damage. Examine the trackpad for visible cracks, warping, or areas that feel spongy when pressed. Press different areas of the trackpad to identify dead zones. If the trackpad appears swollen or the laptop bottom is bulging, stop using the device immediately as this indicates battery swelling.
  7. Perform hardware reset. Shut down your laptop and remove the battery if possible. Hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge residual power. Reconnect the battery and power on. For non-removable batteries, perform this step with the laptop plugged in after the 15-second discharge period.
