How to Fix Screen Resolution Stuck on Windows and Mac
Fix stuck screen resolution issues on Windows and Mac with display driver updates, safe mode troubleshooting, and system resets. Quick solutions included.
- Check display cable connections. Power off your computer and monitor completely. Disconnect the display cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA) from both ends. Reconnect firmly, ensuring the cable clicks into place. Power on the monitor first, then the computer.
- Update display drivers. On Windows, right-click Start button and select Device Manager. Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers. On Mac, click Apple menu > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available updates.
- Reset display settings in safe mode. Boot into Safe Mode by holding Shift while clicking Restart on Windows, or holding Shift during startup on Mac. Once in Safe Mode, go to Display Settings and reset resolution to a lower setting like 1920x1080. Restart normally and adjust to your preferred resolution.
- Run display troubleshooter. On Windows 10/11, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Hardware and Devices > Run the troubleshooter. Follow the prompts to automatically detect and fix display issues. Restart when prompted.
- Uninstall and reinstall display drivers. In Device Manager, right-click your display adapter and select Uninstall device. Check Delete the driver software for this device and click Uninstall. Restart your computer — Windows will automatically reinstall basic drivers. Then install the latest drivers from the manufacturer.
- Check for Windows display scaling issues. Right-click desktop and select Display settings. Under Scale and layout, try different scaling percentages (100%, 125%, 150%). If resolution options are limited, click Advanced display settings and verify the correct monitor is detected.
- Reset graphics settings to defaults. Open your graphics control panel (NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Radeon Settings, or Intel Graphics Command Center). Navigate to display settings and click Restore Defaults or Reset. Apply changes and restart your computer to test the resolution options.
