How to Fix a Monitor with No Signal

Fix your monitor's no signal error with these proven troubleshooting steps. Check cables, ports, and display settings to restore your screen.

  1. Check the video cable connection. Unplug the video cable from both your computer and monitor. Inspect the cable ends for bent pins or damage. Firmly reconnect the cable, ensuring it clicks or screws in completely. Try a different video cable if available.
  2. Verify the correct input source. Press the Input or Source button on your monitor. Cycle through all available inputs (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort, VGA, DVI). Select the input that matches your cable connection. Wait 3-5 seconds after each selection for the signal to appear.
  3. Test different video ports. Move your video cable to a different port on your graphics card or motherboard. If using a dedicated graphics card, avoid motherboard video ports. Try each available port of the same type before switching cable types.
  4. Power cycle your devices. Turn off your monitor and computer completely. Unplug both devices for 30 seconds. Plug in and turn on your monitor first, then start your computer. Watch for any signal during the boot process.
  5. Reset display settings in Safe Mode. Boot your computer into Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing F8 during startup (Windows) or holding Shift while clicking Restart (Mac). Once in Safe Mode, right-click the desktop and select Display Settings. Set resolution to 1920x1080 and refresh rate to 60Hz.
  6. Test with a different monitor or computer. Connect your monitor to a different computer or laptop to test if the monitor works. If available, connect a different monitor to your computer. This isolates whether the issue is with your monitor or computer's video output.
  7. Check graphics card seating. Power down and unplug your computer. Open the case and locate your graphics card. Press down firmly on the graphics card to ensure it's fully seated in the PCIe slot. Check that all power connectors to the graphics card are secure.
