How to Fix Monitor Flickering

Stop monitor screen flickering with these proven troubleshooting steps. Fix refresh rate, cable, and driver issues that cause display problems.

  1. Check all cable connections. Power off your monitor and computer. Unplug the display cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA) from both ends. Examine the cable for visible damage, bent pins, or corrosion. Reconnect firmly, ensuring the cable clicks or seats completely in both ports.
  2. Adjust the refresh rate settings. Right-click your desktop and select Display settings. Click Advanced display settings, then Display adapter properties. Navigate to the Monitor tab and change the refresh rate to 60Hz. Click Apply and test for flickering. If flickering persists, try other available refresh rates.
  3. Update your graphics drivers. Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X and selecting it from the menu. Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers. Restart your computer after the update completes.
  4. Test with a different input port. Connect your monitor to a different port on your graphics card or computer. If using HDMI, switch to DisplayPort or DVI if available. Change the monitor's input source using its physical buttons or on-screen menu to match the new connection.
  5. Eliminate electromagnetic interference. Move wireless devices, speakers, phones, and fluorescent lights away from your monitor and cables. Unplug nearby electrical devices one by one while observing the monitor. Keep the monitor and cables at least three feet from potential interference sources.
  6. Reset monitor settings to factory defaults. Access your monitor's on-screen menu using the physical buttons. Navigate to Settings or System menu and select Factory Reset or Reset All. Confirm the reset and allow the monitor to restart. Test the display at default settings before making adjustments.
  7. Test the monitor on another computer. Connect your flickering monitor to a different computer or laptop using the same cable type. If flickering persists across multiple computers, the monitor hardware is failing. If flickering stops, the issue lies with your original computer's graphics hardware or software.
