How to Fix a Laptop Screen That Is Flickering

Fix your flickering laptop screen with these proven troubleshooting steps. Resolve display driver issues, cable problems, and hardware conflicts quickly.

  1. Restart your laptop. Close all applications and restart your laptop completely. This clears temporary system conflicts and resets the display connection. Wait for the system to fully boot before checking if the flickering persists.
  2. Update your display drivers. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers and let Windows install the latest version. Restart when prompted.
  3. Adjust the screen refresh rate. Right-click the desktop and select Display settings. Scroll down and click Advanced display settings. Select your display and click Display adapter properties. In the Monitor tab, change the refresh rate to 60Hz and click OK.
  4. Check the display cable connection. Power off your laptop and remove the battery if removable. Open the laptop and locate the display cable connecting the screen to the motherboard. Gently disconnect and reconnect this cable, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
  5. Test with an external monitor. Connect an external monitor to your laptop using HDMI, VGA, or USB-C. If the external display works without flickering, the issue is with your laptop screen hardware. If both screens flicker, the problem is with your graphics card or drivers.
  6. Disable problematic applications. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Click the Startup tab and disable applications that might conflict with display drivers, such as screen recording software or third-party display utilities. Restart your laptop to test.
  7. Replace the LCD screen. If all software solutions fail and external monitors work correctly, the LCD panel needs replacement. Order a compatible screen using your laptop's model number. Remove the bezel screws, disconnect the display cable, and install the new screen in reverse order.
