How to Fix Computer Overheating

Stop your computer from overheating with these proven troubleshooting steps. Clean fans, check thermal paste, and optimize airflow to prevent crashes.

  1. Check CPU and GPU temperatures. Download HWiNFO64 or Core Temp to monitor component temperatures. Run the software and note CPU temperatures above 80°C (176°F) under load or GPU temperatures above 85°C (185°F). These indicate overheating that requires immediate attention.
  2. Clean dust from internal components. Shut down and unplug your computer. Open the case and use compressed air to blow dust from CPU cooler fins, GPU fans, case fans, and power supply vents. Hold fans stationary while cleaning to prevent damage from overspin.
  3. Verify all fans are working. Power on your computer and visually confirm all case fans, CPU cooler fan, and GPU fans are spinning. Replace any non-functional fans immediately. Check fan cables are properly connected to motherboard headers or power supply.
  4. Replace thermal paste on CPU. Remove the CPU cooler and clean old thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloth. Apply a rice grain-sized amount of new thermal paste to the CPU center and reinstall the cooler with proper mounting pressure.
  5. Improve case airflow. Install intake fans at the front and bottom of your case, with exhaust fans at the rear and top. Ensure more air enters than exits to create positive pressure. Remove any cable clutter blocking airflow paths.
  6. Reduce CPU and GPU load. Close unnecessary background programs and disable startup applications in Task Manager. Lower graphics settings in games and applications. Use Process Explorer to identify and terminate high-usage processes you don't need.
  7. Upgrade cooling hardware if needed. Install a larger CPU cooler if temperatures remain high after cleaning and paste replacement. Add more case fans or upgrade to higher CFM models. Consider liquid cooling for high-performance CPUs or aftermarket GPU coolers.
