How to Use Sudowrite for Fiction Writing

Sudowrite transforms how fiction writers approach their craft by providing AI-powered assistance for brainstorming, drafting, and editing. This tool helps overcome writer's block while maintaining your unique voice and creative control.

  1. Set up your fiction project. Create a new project in Sudowrite and select 'Novel' or 'Short Story' from the project type dropdown. Upload your existing manuscript or start fresh by typing your opening paragraph. Configure the tone settings by selecting your genre from the dropdown menu and adjusting the creativity slider to match your writing style.
  2. Generate story ideas with Brainstorm. Click the 'Brainstorm' button in the toolbar and enter a brief prompt describing your story concept, character dilemma, or plot point. Select from options like 'Plot Twist,' 'Character Development,' or 'Setting Details.' Review the generated suggestions and click the plus icon next to ideas you want to expand or incorporate.
  3. Expand scenes with Write. Place your cursor at the end of any paragraph and click 'Write' to generate the next 200-300 words. Adjust the length slider if you need shorter or longer continuations. Review the generated text and either accept it entirely, edit portions, or regenerate for different options by clicking the refresh icon.
  4. Develop characters with Describe. Highlight any character name in your text and click 'Describe' to generate detailed physical descriptions, personality traits, or backstory elements. Choose from descriptive categories like 'Appearance,' 'Personality,' or 'History' in the sidebar. Copy useful descriptions into your text or save them in your project notes.
  5. Improve prose with Rewrite. Select any paragraph or sentence that feels flat or unclear and click 'Rewrite.' Choose from style options like 'More descriptive,' 'Shorter,' 'More intense,' or 'Different tone.' Compare the original and rewritten versions side by side, then either replace the text or use elements from both versions.
  6. Overcome writer's block with Story Engine. When stuck, click 'Story Engine' and describe where you want your plot to go next. Enter details about your current scene, character goals, and desired outcome. Select the story beat type from options like 'Conflict,' 'Resolution,' or 'Cliffhanger.' Use the generated plot suggestions to spark new directions.
  7. Refine your work with feedback tools. Use the 'Critique' feature to get AI feedback on pacing, character development, and plot consistency. Highlight sections for targeted analysis or run critique on entire chapters. Review suggestions in the sidebar and implement changes that align with your vision. Export your final draft using File > Export to Word or PDF.
