How to Use Gemini to Summarize Emails

Gemini can transform lengthy email threads and verbose messages into clear, actionable summaries. This saves time and helps you focus on what matters most in your inbox.

  1. Enable Gemini in Gmail. Open Gmail in your web browser and click the Settings gear icon in the top right. Select 'See all settings' then navigate to the 'General' tab. Scroll down to find 'Smart features and personalization' and ensure it's enabled. Click 'Save Changes' at the bottom of the page.
  2. Access the Gemini sidebar. In Gmail, look for the Gemini sparkle icon in the right sidebar. If you don't see it, refresh your browser or wait up to 24 hours for the feature to roll out to your account. Click the sparkle icon to open the Gemini panel.
  3. Select the email to summarize. Open the email or email thread you want summarized. The email must be currently displayed in your main Gmail view. Long email threads work particularly well for summarization as Gemini can identify key points across multiple messages.
  4. Request a summary. In the Gemini sidebar, type 'Summarize this email' or 'Give me a summary of this email thread.' You can also be more specific by asking 'What are the action items in this email?' or 'Summarize the key decisions made in this thread.'
  5. Review and refine the summary. Gemini will generate a summary in the sidebar within seconds. Read through the key points and action items. If you need more detail on specific topics, ask follow-up questions like 'Tell me more about the budget discussion' or 'What was decided about the timeline?'
  6. Use summaries for standalone emails. For emails not in Gmail, copy the email content and paste it into the Gemini web interface at gemini.google.com. Add the prompt 'Please summarize this email and highlight any action items' above the pasted content. Gemini will provide a comprehensive breakdown.
