How to Use Claude for the First Time

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant designed for natural conversations and complex tasks. This guide walks you through creating your account and mastering the essential features you need to get productive immediately.

1. Create your Claude account. Go to claude.ai and click 'Sign Up' in the top right corner. Enter your email address and create a password, or sign up using your Google account. Check your email for a verification link and click it to activate your account.
2. Choose your subscription plan. Select between Claude's free tier or Claude Pro subscription. The free tier includes limited daily usage with Claude 3 Haiku, while Claude Pro provides higher usage limits and access to Claude 3 Opus and Claude 3.5 Sonnet models. Click 'Continue with Free' or 'Upgrade to Pro' based on your needs.
3. Start your first conversation. Click the text box at the bottom of the screen that says 'Talk with Claude...' Type your first message or question and press Enter. Claude will respond in natural language, and you can continue the conversation by typing follow-up messages.
4. Upload files and images. Click the paperclip icon next to the text input box to attach files. Claude can analyze PDFs, images, text documents, and spreadsheets. Select your file from the file browser and wait for it to upload before sending your message.
5. Manage your conversation history. Your conversations appear in the left sidebar as separate chats. Click 'New Chat' at the top left to start fresh conversations. Hover over any chat in the sidebar and click the three dots to rename or delete conversations.
6. Use Claude's specialized capabilities. Ask Claude to help with coding, writing, analysis, math, research, and creative tasks. Be specific about output format — request bullet points, step-by-step instructions, or structured responses. Claude maintains context throughout your conversation, so you can build on previous responses.
