How to Use ChatGPT on Windows
ChatGPT runs in any modern web browser on Windows, making it accessible without special software installation. You can also use the official ChatGPT desktop app for a more integrated experience.
- Open your web browser. Launch Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or any modern browser on your Windows computer. ChatGPT works best with updated browsers that support modern web standards.
- Navigate to chat.openai.com. Type chat.openai.com into your browser's address bar and press Enter. The ChatGPT homepage will load with sign-in options.
- Create an account or sign in. Click Sign Up to create a new OpenAI account with your email, or click Log In if you already have an account. You can also sign in using your Google or Microsoft account for faster access.
- Start a new conversation. Once logged in, you'll see the main ChatGPT interface with a text box at the bottom. Click in the message box and type your question or prompt, then press Enter or click the send button.
- Download the desktop app (optional). Visit the Microsoft Store and search for ChatGPT, or download the official app from OpenAI's website. The desktop app provides notifications, faster startup, and works offline for some features.
- Configure Windows notifications. In Windows Settings, go to System > Notifications and enable notifications for ChatGPT if using the desktop app. This lets you receive alerts for responses and updates.
- Set up keyboard shortcuts. Right-click the ChatGPT desktop app icon and select Pin to taskbar for quick access. You can also create a desktop shortcut by right-clicking the app and selecting Create shortcut.
