How to Upload a PDF to ChatGPT

ChatGPT Plus subscribers can upload PDF files directly to ChatGPT for analysis, summarization, and detailed discussions about the document content. This feature works with most standard PDF files up to 512MB in size.

  1. Verify your ChatGPT subscription. Confirm you have an active ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Team subscription. PDF uploads are not available on the free tier. Check your subscription status by clicking your profile icon in the bottom-left corner of the ChatGPT interface.
  2. Start a new conversation. Open ChatGPT and click 'New chat' in the sidebar or press Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+O (Mac). This ensures you're starting fresh without any previous context that might interfere with your PDF analysis.
  3. Locate the attachment button. Look for the paperclip icon (๐Ÿ“Ž) to the left of the message input box at the bottom of the screen. This attachment button appears only when you have an active Plus subscription and are in a compatible chat mode.
  4. Click the attachment button and select your PDF. Click the paperclip icon to open the file picker. Navigate to your PDF file and select it. ChatGPT accepts PDF files up to 512MB in size. The upload progress will display as a loading bar.
  5. Wait for processing confirmation. ChatGPT will display a preview thumbnail of your PDF once uploaded successfully. You'll see the filename and a small preview image. The system automatically extracts and processes the text content from your document.
  6. Ask questions about your PDF. Type your question or request about the PDF content in the message box and press Enter. You can ask for summaries, specific information extraction, analysis, or any other task related to the document content.
