How to Turn Off Gemini in Gmail
Gmail's Gemini AI features include smart compose, smart reply, and writing assistance that some users prefer to disable. Turning off these features gives you full control over your email composition without AI suggestions.
- Open Gmail settings. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of Gmail. Select 'See all settings' from the dropdown menu to access the full settings panel.
- Navigate to the General tab. Click on the 'General' tab at the top of the settings page. This tab contains most of Gmail's core functionality settings including AI features.
- Disable Smart Compose. Scroll down to the 'Smart Compose' section. Select 'Writing suggestions off' to disable AI-powered text completion while typing emails.
- Turn off Smart Reply. Find the 'Smart Reply' section and select 'Smart Reply off'. This removes the quick response suggestions that appear at the bottom of received emails.
- Disable Smart Compose personalization. Locate 'Smart Compose personalization' and uncheck the box. This prevents Gmail from using your email history to customize AI suggestions.
- Turn off experimental features. Scroll to find any 'Labs' or experimental features related to AI assistance. Disable any active Gemini-related labs by clicking 'Disable' next to each feature.
- Save your changes. Scroll to the bottom of the settings page and click 'Save Changes'. Gmail will refresh to apply your new settings immediately.
