How to Fix Firefox When It Keeps Freezing

Firefox freezing disrupts your browsing and can indicate problems with extensions, corrupted data, or system conflicts. These troubleshooting steps resolve most freezing issues by isolating causes and clearing problematic data.

  1. Start Firefox in Safe Mode. Hold Shift while clicking the Firefox icon, or go to Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled. Click 'Start in Safe Mode' when prompted. If Firefox runs smoothly in Safe Mode, extensions or themes are causing the freezing.
  2. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete (Cmd+Shift+Delete on Mac) to open Clear Recent History. Select 'Everything' from the time range dropdown. Check Cache, Cookies, Site Data, and Offline Website Data. Click 'Clear Now'.
  3. Disable Problematic Extensions. Go to Menu > Add-ons and Themes > Extensions. Disable all extensions by clicking the toggle switch next to each one. Restart Firefox and test for freezing. If stable, enable extensions one by one to identify the problematic one.
  4. Update Firefox to Latest Version. Click Menu > Help > About Firefox. Firefox automatically checks for updates and downloads them. Click 'Restart to update Firefox' if an update is available. Outdated versions often have known freezing bugs that newer releases fix.
  5. Reset Firefox Performance Settings. Go to Menu > Settings > General > Performance. Uncheck 'Use recommended performance settings'. Set 'Content process limit' to 4 or lower. Uncheck 'Use hardware acceleration when available' if you have graphics driver issues.
  6. Create a Fresh Firefox Profile. Type 'about:profiles' in the address bar. Click 'Create a New Profile' and follow the setup wizard. Set the new profile as default and restart Firefox. This eliminates corrupted profile data that causes persistent freezing.
  7. Check System Resources. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and monitor CPU and memory usage while using Firefox. Close other applications consuming significant resources. If your system consistently runs above 80% memory usage, Firefox freezing indicates insufficient RAM.
