How to Enable Two Factor Authentication on Gmail
Secure your Gmail account by enabling two factor authentication. Follow these steps to add a verification code or security key.
- Open your Google Account settings. Go to myaccount.google.com in your web browser. Sign in with your Gmail address and password if prompted. You will land on your Google Account homepage.
- Click the Security tab. At the top of the account page, click 「Security」. This tab contains all account protection settings.
- Locate Two-Step Verification in the left panel. On the left side of the Security page, scroll to find 「How you sign in to Google」. Under this section, look for 「Two-Step Verification」. Click on it.
- Click Get started to begin setup. On the Two-Step Verification page, click the blue 「Get started」 button. Google will walk you through the setup process.
- Confirm your phone number and choose a verification method. Enter or confirm your phone number. Google will ask whether you want to receive verification codes by text message or a phone call. Select your preferred method and click 「Send」. You will receive a code on your phone within seconds.
- Enter the verification code. Type the verification code you received into the field on the screen. Click 「Verify」 when complete. Google will confirm that your phone number is linked to your account.
- Review backup options and finish setup. Google will offer backup verification options such as backup codes or a recovery phone number. Review these options and click 「Turn on」 to enable two-step verification. Your Gmail account is now protected with two factor authentication.
