How to Use Gemini on Android

Gemini is Google's advanced AI assistant that replaces Google Assistant on compatible Android devices. It can answer complex questions, generate creative content, help with coding tasks, and integrate seamlessly with Google Workspace apps.

  1. Install and activate Gemini. Open the Google app on your Android device and tap your profile picture in the top right. Select Settings > Google Assistant > Hey Google & Voice Match. Tap Digital assistant and choose Gemini from the list. If Gemini isn't available, download it from the Google Play Store first.
  2. Launch Gemini using voice or gesture. Say Hey Google or press and hold the power button to activate Gemini. You can also swipe diagonally from either bottom corner of your screen if gesture navigation is enabled. The Gemini interface will appear as an overlay on your current screen.
  3. Ask questions and get AI responses. Type or speak your question directly to Gemini. Ask complex questions like 'Explain quantum computing in simple terms' or 'What are the best practices for Android app security.' Gemini provides detailed, contextual responses with the ability to follow up with related questions.
  4. Generate and edit content. Request Gemini to write emails, create summaries, or draft social media posts by describing what you need. Say 'Write a professional email declining a meeting' or 'Create a summary of today's news in tech.' Gemini will generate content that you can edit and refine through follow-up prompts.
  5. Integrate with Google apps. Connect Gemini to Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar by saying 'Show me emails from this week' or 'What's on my calendar tomorrow.' Gemini can read and summarize documents, create calendar events, and help manage your Google Workspace content directly.
  6. Use image analysis and generation. Take a photo or upload an image and ask Gemini to analyze it. Request 'Describe this image' or 'What's the text in this photo.' For image generation, describe what you want created like 'Generate an image of a futuristic cityscape at sunset.'
  7. Manage conversation history and settings. Access your conversation history by tapping the menu icon in the Gemini app. Toggle activity saving on or off in Settings > Gemini Apps Activity. You can delete individual conversations or clear all history from the activity controls.
