- Access Claude and start a new conversation. Navigate to claude.ai and sign in to your account. Click the plus icon or 'New Chat' to start a fresh conversation. Ensure you're using Claude 3.5 Sonnet or Claude 3 Opus for best PDF processing capabilities.
- Upload your PDF file. Click the paperclip icon in the message input area. Select 'Upload File' and choose your PDF from your device. Claude supports PDFs up to 100MB and can handle text, images, charts, and tables within the document.
- Request a summary with specific parameters. Type a clear prompt specifying what type of summary you need. Include the length, focus areas, and format preferences. For example: 'Please provide a 300-word summary focusing on key findings and methodology' or 'Create bullet points highlighting the main arguments and conclusions.'
- Review and refine the summary. Read through Claude's initial summary and identify any areas that need clarification or expansion. Ask follow-up questions like 'Can you elaborate on the financial projections mentioned?' or 'What were the specific recommendations in section 3?'
- Request specific analysis or insights. Go beyond basic summarization by asking Claude to identify patterns, compare sections, or extract specific data types. Request analysis like 'What are the main risks identified?' or 'Compare the Q1 and Q2 performance metrics mentioned.'
- Export or save your summary. Copy the summary text from Claude's response and paste it into your preferred document editor or note-taking app. For longer conversations, use the conversation's permalink feature to bookmark the chat for future reference.
