How to Use Claude to Analyze Spreadsheets
Claude can analyze spreadsheet data to identify patterns, generate summaries, and answer specific questions about your datasets. This capability works with Excel files, CSV documents, and data copied from Google Sheets.
- Prepare your spreadsheet file. Save your data as an Excel file (.xlsx), CSV file (.csv), or copy the data directly from Google Sheets. Ensure column headers are clear and descriptive. Remove any sensitive information before uploading.
- Upload the file to Claude. Click the attachment button (paperclip icon) in the Claude chat interface. Select your spreadsheet file from your device. Wait for the upload to complete and Claude to confirm it can read the file structure.
- Describe your analysis goals. Tell Claude exactly what you want to analyze. Be specific about metrics, trends, or insights you need. For example: 'Analyze sales trends by month and identify the top 5 performing products' or 'Find correlations between marketing spend and revenue.'
- Review the initial analysis. Claude will examine your data structure and provide an overview of what it found. It identifies column types, data ranges, and potential analysis opportunities. Confirm this matches your expectations before proceeding.
- Request specific insights. Ask follow-up questions to drill down into your data. Request calculations, trend analysis, outlier detection, or data visualizations. Claude can perform statistical analysis, create summary tables, and explain patterns in plain language.
- Generate actionable recommendations. Request Claude to translate its findings into business recommendations. Ask for next steps, areas requiring attention, or suggestions for data collection improvements. Claude can prioritize findings by impact and urgency.
