How to Update Your Browser
Keeping your browser updated ensures you have the latest security patches, performance improvements, and new features. Most modern browsers update automatically, but you can manually check for and install updates when needed.
- Identify your current browser. Look at your browser's icon in the taskbar or dock. Common browsers include Chrome (circular multicolored icon), Firefox (orange fox), Safari (compass icon), and Edge (blue 'e'). Note which browser you're using as update methods vary by browser.
- Open your browser's settings menu. Click the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner of Chrome or Edge. For Firefox, click the three-line menu icon. Safari users should click Safari in the menu bar. This opens the main browser menu with various options and settings.
- Navigate to the update section. In Chrome, select Help > About Google Chrome. In Firefox, choose Help > About Firefox. Edge users select Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge. Safari users click About Safari from the Safari menu. This opens the about page where update information is displayed.
- Check for available updates. The about page automatically checks for updates when opened. If an update is available, you'll see a download progress bar or an 'Update' button. If your browser is current, you'll see a message confirming you're running the latest version.
- Install the update. If an update is available, click the 'Update' or 'Restart' button. The browser will download and install the update automatically. Some browsers require you to close and reopen them to complete the installation process.
- Restart your browser. Close your browser completely and reopen it to finish the update process. Check the about page again to confirm the new version number. Your browser should now display the latest version information and any new features may be available.
- Verify the update completed. Return to the about page using the same menu path from step 3. Confirm the version number has changed and shows you're running the latest version. Test basic browser functions like opening new tabs and visiting websites to ensure everything works properly.
