How to Reset Your Router

Resetting your router clears temporary glitches and restores default settings that can resolve slow internet speeds, connection drops, and network access problems. This process involves either a soft restart or a complete factory reset depending on your issue severity.

  1. Determine the type of reset needed. Try a soft reset first by unplugging the power cable for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. If problems persist after the router fully boots up (usually 2-3 minutes), proceed with a factory reset using the physical reset button.
  2. Locate the reset button on your router. Find the small, recessed reset button on your router's back or bottom panel. The button is typically labeled 'Reset' or 'Restore' and requires a paperclip or similar tool to press. Keep the router plugged in and powered on during this step.
  3. Press and hold the reset button. Insert a paperclip into the reset button and hold it down for 10-15 seconds while the router remains powered on. You should see the LED lights flash or change color, indicating the reset process has started. Release the button after the lights begin flashing.
  4. Wait for the router to reboot completely. Allow 2-4 minutes for the router to fully restart and initialize. The LED indicators will cycle through different colors before settling on a steady light, typically green or blue. Do not unplug or interfere with the router during this process.
  5. Access the router's admin panel. Open a web browser and navigate to your router's default IP address, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Enter the default username and password, typically 'admin' and 'admin' or 'admin' and 'password', found on a sticker on your router.
  6. Reconfigure your network settings. Set up your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password in the wireless settings section. Configure any port forwarding, parental controls, or security settings you previously had enabled. Save all changes before exiting the admin panel.
  7. Test your internet connection. Connect your devices to the newly configured network using the updated credentials. Run a speed test from multiple devices to ensure your internet connection is working properly and performing at expected speeds.
