How to Replace Google Assistant with Gemini
Google's Gemini AI offers more advanced conversational capabilities than the standard Google Assistant. You can replace Google Assistant with Gemini as your default voice assistant on supported Android devices running Android 10 or later.
- Install the Gemini app. Open the Google Play Store and search for 'Gemini'. Download and install the official Gemini app from Google LLC. The app requires at least 2GB of free storage space and Android 10 or higher.
- Open Gemini and complete setup. Launch the Gemini app and tap 'Get started'. Sign in with your Google account when prompted. Grant necessary permissions including microphone access, camera access, and notification permissions.
- Access digital assistant settings. Open Settings on your Android device. Scroll down and tap 'Apps' or 'Apps & notifications'. Find and select 'Digital assistant app' or 'Default apps', then tap 'Digital assistant app'.
- Select Gemini as default assistant. Tap on the current default assistant (usually Google or Google Assistant). Select 'Gemini' from the list of available options. Confirm your selection by tapping 'OK' or 'Set as default'.
- Configure voice activation. Return to the Gemini app and tap the profile icon in the top right. Select 'Settings', then 'Hey Google & Voice Match'. Turn on 'Hey Google' and retrain your voice model by saying 'Hey Google' three times when prompted.
- Test the replacement. Press and hold the power button or say 'Hey Google' to activate Gemini. Ask a question or give a command to verify Gemini responds instead of Google Assistant. The Gemini interface will appear with its distinctive design and capabilities.
- Adjust Gemini preferences. Open the Gemini app settings to customize response style, voice speed, and integration preferences. Enable or disable specific features like real-time information access, conversation memory, and smart home control based on your needs.
