How to Replace an iPhone Battery

Replacing an iPhone battery restores your device's performance and extends its lifespan. This repair requires specific tools and careful handling to avoid damaging internal components.

  1. Power down and gather tools. Turn off your iPhone completely by holding the side button and volume button, then sliding to power off. Gather a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver, Phillips #000 screwdriver, plastic prying tools, suction cup, tweezers, and adhesive strips. Remove any case or screen protector.
  2. Remove the display screws. Locate the two Pentalobe screws next to the Lightning port at the bottom of your iPhone. Remove both screws using the P2 Pentalobe screwdriver. Keep these screws in a small container as they are easily lost.
  3. Separate the display assembly. Place a suction cup near the home button and gently pull while inserting a plastic prying tool between the display and rear case. Work the tool around the edges to release the adhesive. Lift the display like opening a book, hinging from the left side.
  4. Disconnect display cables. Remove the metal bracket covering the display connectors using the Phillips screwdriver. Carefully disconnect the display cables by lifting them straight up with your fingernail or plastic tool. Set the display assembly aside in a safe location.
  5. Remove the battery connector. Locate the battery connector bracket and remove its screws with the Phillips screwdriver. Lift the bracket and disconnect the battery cable by prying it straight up. This cuts power to the logic board for safety.
  6. Remove adhesive strips. Find the white adhesive strips at the bottom of the battery. Pull each strip slowly and steadily at a low angle until it completely releases the battery. If a strip breaks, use a plastic tool to carefully pry the battery up while applying heat with a hair dryer.
  7. Install the new battery. Position the new battery in the compartment, ensuring proper alignment with the connector end toward the logic board. Connect the battery cable first, then replace the connector bracket and screws. Apply new adhesive strips if included with your replacement battery.
  8. Reassemble the iPhone. Reconnect all display cables and replace the metal bracket with its screws. Carefully lower the display assembly, ensuring no cables are pinched. Press around the edges to reseat the adhesive, then replace the two Pentalobe screws at the bottom.
