How to Print Double-Sided (Duplex) on Windows and Mac

Double-sided printing saves paper and creates professional-looking documents. Most modern printers support automatic duplex printing, while older models require manual paper flipping.

  1. Check your printer's duplex capabilities. Open your printer's control panel or check the manual to confirm duplex support. Look for 'automatic duplex' or 'two-sided printing' in the specifications. If your printer lacks automatic duplex, you can still print double-sided manually.
  2. Access print settings in your document. Open your document and press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Cmd+P (Mac). The print dialog will appear with various printing options displayed.
  3. Select your printer and find duplex options. Choose your printer from the dropdown menu. Look for 'Two-sided', 'Duplex', or 'Print on both sides' options. On Windows, click 'More settings' or 'Printer properties' if needed. On Mac, expand the print options by clicking 'Show Details'.
  4. Choose your duplex orientation. Select either 'Flip on long edge' (standard for portrait documents) or 'Flip on short edge' (for landscape or booklet-style). Long edge creates pages that flip like a book, while short edge flips like a calendar.
  5. Start the print job. Click 'Print' to begin. If your printer has automatic duplex, it will handle everything. For manual duplex, the printer will print odd-numbered pages first, then prompt you to reinsert the paper.
  6. Complete manual duplex if required. When prompted, remove the printed pages from the output tray. Flip the entire stack and reinsert it into the paper tray with the blank sides facing the print mechanism. Click 'Continue' or 'OK' to print the even-numbered pages.
  7. Set duplex as default. To make double-sided printing automatic, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows) or System Preferences > Printers & Scanners (Mac). Select your printer, click 'Manage' or 'Options & Supplies', then set duplex as the default in printing preferences.
