How to Install Cursor AI Editor
Cursor is an AI-powered code editor built on VS Code that integrates GPT-4 and other language models directly into your development workflow. Installing Cursor takes just a few minutes and works across Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.
- Navigate to the Cursor website. Open your web browser and go to cursor.sh. The homepage displays download options for all supported operating systems with automatic platform detection.
- Download the installer for your operating system. Click the download button for your platform. Windows users get a .exe file, Mac users receive a .dmg file, and Linux users can choose between .deb and .AppImage formats.
- Run the installer. Double-click the downloaded file to start installation. Windows users may see a security warning—click 'More info' then 'Run anyway'. Mac users should drag Cursor to the Applications folder when prompted.
- Complete the installation process. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish installation. Accept the license agreement and choose your installation directory if prompted. The installer will create desktop shortcuts and file associations automatically.
- Launch Cursor and sign in. Open Cursor from your Applications folder, Start menu, or desktop shortcut. Create a new account or sign in with your existing Cursor credentials when the welcome screen appears.
- Import VS Code settings and extensions. Cursor will offer to import your existing VS Code settings, extensions, and keybindings. Click 'Import' to transfer your configuration or 'Skip' to start fresh.
- Configure AI features. Access AI settings through Cursor > Preferences > AI. Enable the AI features you want to use, such as code completion, chat, and command suggestions. Set your preferred AI model if you have a Pro subscription.
