How to Free Up RAM on Windows

Windows RAM fills up over time as programs consume memory, causing system slowdowns and performance issues. Freeing up RAM immediately restores responsiveness and prevents crashes without requiring a restart.

  1. Check current RAM usage. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Click the Performance tab, then Memory. Review the current usage percentage and identify which programs consume the most RAM under the Processes tab.
  2. Close unnecessary programs. Select high-memory programs you don't need from the Processes list. Click End task to close them. Focus on web browsers with multiple tabs, media editing software, and games that continue running in the background.
  3. Disable startup programs. Click the Startup tab in Task Manager. Right-click programs you don't need at startup and select Disable. Target programs marked as High startup impact to reduce boot-time memory usage.
  4. Clear Windows search indexing cache. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Scroll to Windows Search, right-click it, and select Restart. This clears the search cache that often accumulates several GB of RAM usage.
  5. Adjust virtual memory settings. Press Windows + X and select System. Click Advanced system settings, then Settings under Performance. Select the Advanced tab, click Change under Virtual memory, and set a custom size equal to 1.5 times your RAM amount.
  6. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic. Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and press Enter. Select Restart now and check for problems. This identifies faulty RAM modules that cause memory leaks and inefficient usage patterns.
