How to Fix Wi-Fi 6 Router Issues

Wi-Fi 6 routers deliver faster speeds and better performance, but configuration issues and compatibility problems can prevent optimal operation. These troubleshooting steps resolve the most common Wi-Fi 6 router issues.

  1. Update the router firmware. Access your router's admin panel by typing its IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into a web browser. Navigate to Administration > Firmware Update and check for available updates. Download and install the latest firmware version, then restart the router when prompted.
  2. Reset Wi-Fi 6 specific settings. In the router admin panel, go to Wireless Settings > Advanced. Disable WPA3 temporarily and set security to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode. Turn off Target Wake Time (TWT) and OFDMA if your devices are having connection issues. Save settings and restart the router.
  3. Separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Access Wireless Settings and disable band steering or smart connect features. Create separate network names (SSIDs) for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Connect problematic devices to the 2.4GHz network first to test stability, then try the 5GHz network.
  4. Adjust channel width and selection. Navigate to Wireless Settings > Channel and Bandwidth. Set 2.4GHz to channel 1, 6, or 11 with 20MHz width. For 5GHz, use channels 36-48 or 149-165 with 80MHz width instead of 160MHz. Enable automatic channel selection if manual settings don't improve performance.
  5. Update device network drivers. On Windows computers, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, and select Update driver. For mobile devices, check for system updates in Settings. Restart devices after driver updates complete.
  6. Configure Quality of Service settings. In the router admin panel, locate QoS or Traffic Analyzer settings. Disable any aggressive QoS rules that might be throttling Wi-Fi 6 devices. Set QoS to automatic or disable it entirely if you're experiencing speed issues with newer devices.
  7. Perform a factory reset if issues persist. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 10-15 seconds while powered on. Wait for the router to restart completely. Reconfigure your network settings from scratch, starting with basic wireless settings before enabling advanced Wi-Fi 6 features.
