How to Fix Screen Resolution Issues on Windows
Screen resolution problems cause blurry text, stretched images, and poor display quality on Windows computers. These issues typically stem from outdated graphics drivers, incorrect display settings, or Windows scaling problems.
- Check your current display settings. Right-click on an empty area of your desktop and select Display settings. Note the current resolution under Display resolution. Compare this to your monitor's native resolution, which you can find in your monitor's manual or by searching your monitor model online.
- Set the correct resolution. In Display settings, click the dropdown menu under Display resolution. Select your monitor's native resolution, typically marked as Recommended. Click Keep changes when prompted. If your native resolution doesn't appear, your graphics driver needs updating.
- Update your graphics driver. Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager. Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers. Restart your computer after the update completes, then check if your native resolution now appears in display settings.
- Adjust Windows scaling. In Display settings, locate Scale and layout. If text appears too small at native resolution, change the scaling to 125% or 150% instead of lowering the resolution. Sign out and back in to apply scaling changes to all applications.
- Reset display settings if problems persist. Press Windows key + I, go to System > Display > Advanced display. Click Display adapter properties, then click List All Modes. Select your native resolution with the highest refresh rate your monitor supports. Click OK and Apply.
- Configure multiple monitor setups. For multiple monitors, open Display settings and click Identify to see which number corresponds to each screen. Drag the display rectangles to match your physical monitor arrangement. Set each monitor to its native resolution individually using the dropdown menu.
