How to Fix Screen Resolution Issues on Mac
Screen resolution issues on Mac can cause blurry text, incorrect scaling, or displays that don't fill the entire screen. These problems typically stem from incorrect display settings, outdated software, or connection issues with external monitors.
- Check display settings in System Preferences. Open System Preferences > Displays. For built-in displays, verify the resolution is set to Default for display. For external monitors, select Scaled and choose the appropriate resolution from the list. Hold the Option key while clicking Scaled to see additional resolution options.
- Reset the display settings to defaults. In System Preferences > Displays, hold the Option key and click the Scaled radio button. Select Reset to Defaults from the dropdown menu. This clears any custom resolution settings that may be causing issues. Restart your Mac to apply the changes.
- Check cable connections and monitor settings. For external displays, ensure the cable is securely connected to both your Mac and the monitor. Try a different cable or port if available. Check your monitor's built-in menu for Auto-Adjust or Auto-Configure options to automatically detect the correct resolution from your Mac.
- Reset NVRAM and SMC. Shut down your Mac completely. For Intel Macs, restart while holding Option+Command+P+R for 20 seconds, then release. For Apple Silicon Macs, simply restart normally as NVRAM resets automatically. If issues persist, reset the SMC by holding Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds on Intel MacBooks.
- Update macOS and display drivers. Open System Preferences > Software Update and install any available updates. macOS updates often include display driver improvements. For third-party monitors, check the manufacturer's website for macOS-specific drivers or firmware updates.
- Create a custom resolution using SwitchResX. Download SwitchResX from the developer's website if standard resolutions don't work properly. Install and open the application, select your display, and click the Custom Resolutions tab. Add your monitor's native resolution with the correct refresh rate, then apply the settings.
- Check for interference and try Safe Mode. Restart your Mac in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key during startup. This disables third-party display software that might be causing conflicts. If the resolution works correctly in Safe Mode, remove recently installed display-related applications or utilities.
